ABOUT


Janice Chanmi Kang (b.2003) is a multidisciplinary artist working in Southern California who examines the idea of performance extending beyond the theater into everyday life. When life itself becomes a performance, the public becomes the metaphysical stage showcasing the self. Rooted in years of classical piano and dance training, her work draws from this language of choreography, performance, and musicianship. Her installations spotlight the expressive potential of the body to discuss the regulation of femininity, the gaze and a negotiation of privacy and community.

Finding tension between public performance and private practice, her works reveal fragility, labor, and distress hidden behind the illusion of true performance, asking when our actions are authentic or performative. At the same moment, the oppressive and voyeuristic nature of the gaze places judgement on a potentially falsified performance of self in this dissonance of the two states. 

She has received her Bachelors of Arts with high departamental distinction in Studio Art at the University of California, San Diego. She also was a recipent of the Russell Foundation grant in 2026 which funded her recent project, Trio Agon, 2026.
