ABOUT

Janice Chanmi Kang (b. Sacramento, CA) is a San Diego based sculpture artist who examines the pressure to perform a perfected version of the self.  Rooted in over a decade of classical piano and dance training, her work draws from this language referencing dance gestures, balance and history. Finding tension between public performance and private practice, her works reveal the fragility, labor, and emotional interiority hidden behind the illusion of effortless performance. Sculptures and installations treat the body as material emphasizing the expressive potential of the flesh to discuss space, concealment, and the regulation of femininity.

Janice is currently pursuing her BA in Studio Art at the University of California, San Diego. She is a recipent of the Russell Foundation grant in 2026.
